Night and Day
(September 5, 1990)
Night
The Wild Beasts run, laughing
Day
The Good Children lie, sated
Tumbling on each other
Run animated through striped shadows
Of full trees, glowering houses, streetlights, moon
Over the paved path, gravel and grass
Of behind houses and across lots shortcuts
Laughing to be alive and young and free
"We can do it all, we can be superheroes"
Mumbling to each other
Lie languid in dissipated light
Of curtained windows, beige walls, fluorescent overhead
On padded kitchen chairs, pebble pattern linoleum
Of the reader's digest clean your plate house
Sated with kool-aid and toast and cookies
"We can watch tv, we can listen to records"
